Why not just make it so that there's only one variant (half tatami mat) and make it so that when you're shifting, they don't connect, but when you aren't, they have a connected texture in every direction? So when tatami mats would have a heigt of 5 or 6 pixels instead of 2, the wooden part of a bed would be covered and therefore a bed.
